While the keto diet gives you all the liberty to eat all the fat to lose the fat with no carbs, it often becomes a tough ride for vegetarians so here i try making it simpler with my 3 favourite veg keto snacks that are absolutely mouth watering and easy to make.

But first let us find out what is a ketogenic diet and its benefits

1. Keto idly

The favourite south indian steamed pancakes are a very healthy option too.

Proteins : 5 gms
Carbs : 2.5 gms net


Makes 4 pieces

8 oz or 1 cup heavy cream cottage cheese(paneer)
4 oz or 1/2 cup flax seeds
4 tbsp coconut flour/ grated coconut
1 tsp Green chilli paste or any other seasoning paste of your choice
1 tbsp yoghurt
Salt to taste
Clarified butter (ghee) for greasing.


  1. Blend the paneer finely in a dough maker or a blender.
  2. Grind the flax seeds and grated coconut to a fine powder.
  3. Add this mixture and all other ingredients to the idly mix and make it into a thick paste.
  4. Grease steamer plates with clarified butter and place the batter evenly in it.
  5. Steam it in the idli steamer for 20 mins and your favourite idlies are ready to dig in.
  6. Garnish the idlis with generous amount of clarified butter for the fat intake keto demands.

2. Keto hariyali paneer tikka

This mouth watering delicacy is absolutely keto-friendly! Do try it out!

Serves 2 

List A
1 cup coriander leaves & 1 cup mint leaves
1 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp clove powder
1-2 green chillies 
1/2 tbsp yoghurt
1 tsp lemon juice
Salt to taste

List B
4 tbsp clarified butter (ghee)
8 oz or 1 cup heavy cream cottage cheese (paneer), cut into 1 inch cubes.


  1. Grind all the ingredients of list A into a fine puree, add water if needed.
  2. In a bowl, add puree and place the cottage cheese cubes. Let it marinate for an hour or two.
  3. Add clarified butter to a grill/pan and cook the cubes either in skewers or directly till light brown on both sides. It is now ready to serve.

3. Keto upma

My favourite is the keto upma, a supplement to the regular semolina dish that serves as a great and filling breakfast.

Serves 2 

12 oz cauliflower florets
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1-2 dried red chillies
6-7 curry leaves
1/4 tsp asafoetida
1/2 tsp ginger paste
3 tbsp clarified butter (ghee)
Salt to taste
1/4 cup or 2 oz onions chopped   (optional)
1/4 cup or 2 oz tomatoes chopped (optional)


  1. In a blender, add cauliflower florets and make a coarse dry mix, tiny dry granules consistency.
  2. In a deep pan, add clarified butter, to it add mustard and cumin seeds, once it splutters add red chillies, asafoetida and curry leaves.
  3. Now add, ginger paste and onions.Saute onions till transparent.
  4. Once onions are done, add tomatoes and saute for few minutes.
  5. To this, add the cauliflower mixture plus some water and salt. Give it a fine mix and let it cook till it soaks up water and becomes soft or around 7-8 mins.
    Your favourite upma is ready with a keto twist.
